Product focus: Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS

In the latest in our series of product spotlights, we take a look at Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS pressure sensitive, temperature tolerant adhesive.
What is it?
F. Ball’s Styccobond F49 is a water-based vinyl adhesive with the familiar characteristics of a pressure sensitive adhesive that offers instant high grab combined with ultra-high bond strength to hold floorcoverings firmly in place when subject to extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations (as low as -20°c and up to +60°c).
Where is it used?
Where there is the potential for temperatures to rise and fall quickly, such as in conservatories or rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows that are subject to ‘solar gain’. This can cause vinyl floorcoverings to expand and contract significantly, potentially leading to unsightly tenting and gapping at the edges of vinyl planks and tiles over time.
The extremely strong, water-resistant bond provided by Styccobond F49 allows it to be used in damp and humid areas. It is also solvent-free and low hazard, making it suitable for use in sensitive areas, such as hospitals, and tested to IMO standards and approved for use in marine flooring installations.
The adhesive is also suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems.
What’s different about it?
Styccobond F49 utilises hybrid adhesive technology to offer the twin benefits of temperature tolerance and pressure sensitive adhesive characteristics. Traditionally, temperature tolerant adhesives have been ‘wet-lay’, and flooring contractors installing floorcoverings in areas where they will be exposed to extreme temperatures have had to forgo the advantages of pressure sensitive alternatives.
Something you might not know about the product:
Styccobond F49 has also been approved for installing vertical PVC flooring accessories, such as skirting, capping and coving. This means it offers an alternative to contact adhesives and allows contractors to use one adhesive to install both floorcoverings and flooring accessories. Unlike contact adhesives, the hybrid adhesive only needs to be applied to one surface, and the same properties that make it perfect for installing intricate vinyl tile designs allow for the repositioning of vertical flooring accessories during the early stages of drying.
