60 second interview: Gary Perkins

Gary Perkins from Status Flooring gave us a minute of his time, to answer some quick fire questions.

Name:  Gary Perkins

Age: 47

Company: Status Flooring

Job Title: Director

How did you get into the flooring industry?

When I was 18 years old, I was a semi-professional golfer but was looking for a more stable career. My father and I happened to play golf with the former Managing Director of Status Flooring – he offered me a job and I’ve been in the company ever since!

What’s been the biggest change in the industry over the past 10 years?

The move over to using water-based products like Stopgap 300 HD has largely impacted the industry; they have changed the way we analyse screeds for moisture, meaning we are using more damp proof membranes now.

Looking forwards, what do you think will be the biggest change in the next 10 years?

I imagine that more technology will be brought out in the future. Time really is of the essence when we’re on a job, so I’m sure that more fast-track solutions will be developed.

What’s the worst job you’ve been on?

Sometimes, we take up a floorcovering and find that a job is going to be a lot more difficult than we anticipated. So generally, jobs with a badly damaged subfloor can be troublesome and time-consuming.

And what’s the best?

The best jobs are ironically the most challenging ones; it’s great when you are able to get there in the end and please the client.

Do you have a go-to product for certain jobs?

Nearly all of the products that I use are F.Ball products but the one that I rely on the most is Stopgap 1200 Pro.

What do you like best about the job?

It’s great that you never know what’s around the corner, every job is different!

What is your least favourite thing about the job?

Equally, the fact that you never know what’s around the corner means that some jobs can be much more difficult than they sound like they are going to be.
