60 second interview: John Hudson

Quick fire questions with John Hudson from Contract Flooring.

Name:  John Hudson
Age: 55
Company: Contract Flooring
Job Title: Managing Director

How did you get into the flooring industry?

I got into the industry by accident! My father in law at the time was working as a contracts manager of a large flooring firm. He offered me a job and the rest is history!

What’s been the biggest change in the industry over the past 10 years?

The biggest change to the industry has definitely been the change in flooring products and technology. We used to work with alcohol and solvent based products and now all of the solvents have been removed and flooring products have become far more user-friendly.

Looking forwards, what do you think will be the biggest change in the next 10 years?

It’s impossible to predict! Aside from our jobs being takenover by robots, I can’t really see how the industry and the products that we use could possibly progress more than they have done already.

What’s the worst job you’ve been on?

We once refurbished a Fried Chicken shop – it’s safe to say that after seeing the mess and dirt in the kitchen, I’ve never eaten there again!

And what’s the best?

The best job I’ve ever been involved in was truly unforgettable – we refurbished the home of the Sultan of Dubai who lived nextdoor to Prince Charles and Princess Diana. His home was just amazing, he even had a safe that was so large that it required flooring!

Do you have a go-to product for certain jobs?

We always use F. Ball products and work closely with our F.Ball representative.

What do you like best about the job?

I love the customer satisfaction element of this job. It’s wonderful to see how pleased our customers are with their flooring and it’s very rewarding for us to see how much a flooring refurbishment can totally transform a building.

What is your least favourite thing about the job?

There’s nothing really that I don’t like about this job! Some elements of a flooring installation are tricky but you get used to that and it’s all part of the process.
