Ask the expert: How do you deal with old adhesive residues?

When installing floorcoverings as part of a refurbishment, contractors are often faced with the question of how to deal with old adhesive residues after removing previous floorcoverings. Here is an expert’s guide for deciding what to do.

Mechanical removal

Most smoothing underlayments require the complete removal of old adhesive residues before they are applied. One solution then, is simply to remove old adhesive residues. There are a number of ways to do this, including using hand tools or with mechanical methods such as scabbling, grinding and planing.

Stopgap 1200 Pro

Another option is available for when you need to get the job done quickly and easily. Stopgap 1200 Pro been developed specifically for use directly over old adhesive residues, without the need to prime. The way it is formulated means it exerts less stress and strain on old adhesive residues during the curing process, avoiding debonding between the adhesive residues and subfloor.
