Project of the month: Cliffs Pavillion, Southend

How Young’s Flooring created a show-stopping finish at the Cliffs Pavilion theatre in Southend-on-Sea.

We love to see the fantastic results our customers get using F. Ball products. That’s why, every month, we take a look at all of the jobs going on around the country and pick one that we think has made the best use of our products. This month, we pay a visit to the Cliffs Pavilion theatre in Southend-on-Sea, which was re-vamped by contractors from Young’s Flooring.

Dance hall days
Contractors from Young’s Flooring, also based in Southend-on-Sea, were called in to the historic theatre to refurbish the auditorium floor. Having once been used as a dance hall, the auditorium had an existing wooden sprung floor situated on top of a concrete subfloor. However, in its new role, the floor was no longer fit for purpose, unable to withstand the heavy traffic and the demands placed upon it. The wood floorcovering was subsequently removed and the area was refurbished from scratch.

Preparing the subfloor
Once the wood floorcovering had been removed, a moisture measurement test was carried out as a precaution. The test indicated that the subfloor was sufficiently dry, and the joisting was repaired and reinforced where necessary before a 25mm plywood subfloor was installed. The plywood was primed using Stopgap P131, a general purpose primer, and Stopgap 500 Micro was used to skim the plywood joints. A layer of Stopgap 700 Superflex was then applied over the plywood to create a flat, smooth surface.

A show-stopping finish
To finish, Karndean Van Gogh floorcoverings were installed over the subfloor. Eddie Young, managing director of Young’s Flooring, commented: “F. Ball products are always my go-to selection, simply because they do exactly what they say they will. I know I can always rely on them to get the job done and this time was no different. In fact, because the products are so effective and fast drying, we managed to finish earlier than expected. When you’re working on a tight schedule, that extra time makes all the difference.”
